Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan celebrates after scoring a goal

…And The Belt Goes To: Maple Leafs Edition

The Arizona Coyotes outlasted the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Tuesday night, but there was one Coyote who stood above the rest.

When you think about it, it’s pretty amazing that the 39 year old captain of the Arizona Coyotes – a man who has been in the league twenty seasons – is still scoring goals at all. Two in one night? Let’s not get carried away.

That’s exactly what Shane Doan did and continues to do for the Yotes, though. He’s the gift that keeps on giving after all the years and the franchise turmoil.

Tuesday night he took matters into his own hands and scored two goals in the span of fourteen seconds.

First he beat Jonathan Bernier high with a backhand shot after Stefan Elliott‘s dump in caromed off the boards and right into his path.

Fourteen seconds later Kyle Chipchura picked up a giveaway from Byron Froese and hit Doan in stride. His subsequent shot went off the post, but he followed up the rebound and jammed it home past Bernier for his second goal of the night.

The quick burst put the Arizona Coyotes up 2-1 and ultimately gave them the boost to hang on and win 3-2.

Louis Domingue said it best. “This guy looked like a 20 year old” out there last night.

Look at that face.

There has been much ado about the kids in the Arizona Coyotes lineup and rightly so. They have shouldered much of the goal-scoring burden this season. However, with 8 goals in 24 games, it’s not like the captain has been a slouch out there for the boys in brick red and black.

There’s no telling how many more seasons, if any, we’ll get to see with #19 on the ice for the Coyotes.

The only things I know for sure is that I’m enjoying it and that we won’t see another #19 in an Arizona Coyotes sweater again.
