Five More Cuts Made By Coyotes, Samuelsson Brothers Sent To Springfield
The Arizona Coyotes and general manager Don Maloney announced another five cuts today, trimming the roster down to 26 ahead of the preseason finale Friday night.
Here’s the list of cuts and assignments:
Henrik Samuelsson – Springfield – AHL
Philip Samuelsson – Springfield – AHL
Derek Smith – Springfield – AHL
Jordan Szwarz – Springfield – AHL
The team also announced that Corey Potter has been released from his professional tryout agreement.
Louis Domingue will likely be the odd goalie out, which means we are really sitting at two cuts needing to be made to get to our 23 man opening night roster.
While injury hampered Henrik Samuelsson in his pursuit of one of the coveted NHL roster spots, the real story for me is the remainder of Dylan Strome on the roster heading into the final round of cuts. As we’ve discussed before he has his rough spots, but it would be hard to say he doesn’t deserve a spot. He’s looked fairly solid every time I’ve watched him. It’s possible we could see him remain with the big boys for nine games and be sent back to Erie. It’s also possible he could be cut before the season begins with the management style displayed by Maloney and Tippett and the glut of grinders the Yotes are packing around. If it came down to it, I’d prefer to keep Duclair with Domi and send Strome down for one more season, but we’ll see how that situation pans out.
Jordan Martinook has been getting the media love from Tippett, so I feel like it’s safe to assume he’ll be sticking. That leaves us with Matthias Plachta, Anthony Duclair, and Dylan Strome as the options most likely to be cut. It would be wonderful if Tippett and co found it in their hearts to waive or send down one of the many grinders (I’m looking at you specifically John Scott), but if wishes were fishes and all that.
Looking forward to finding out the final cuts this weekend. It’s almost time kids. Almost time.
